From Past to Present: 30 Fashion Trends that have Survived the Past 50 Years

One of the main aspects of fashion design is that trends and fads come and go. Decades can be represented visually by clothing alone and they play a huge role in what society is thinking and feeling. But there are certain design trends that have stood the test of time and remained staples of fashion.
1. Mens wear
Brought onto the scene by actresses like Katherine Hepburn; sleek pants and masculine shirts were approved by Hollywood, allowing women to finally be comfy and stylish.
2. Diamonds
While always popular, diamond earrings surged in popularity in the 1920s - influenced by art deco. Women wore a variety of styles - from studs to chandeliers that still prevail today.
3. Little Black Dress
The LBD was an instant hit when Coco Chanel first debuted it in 1926. Up until then black was reserved for mourners. But with the Depression women found it was easy and cheap to make.
Developed by Dior and brought to our televisions by Jackie Kennedy, the pencil skirt flatters all body shapes.
5. Lace
A timeless touch. Once seen as old fashioned but can be sexy or sweet.
6. Trench Coat
Lightweight but waterproof, the trench coat makes the perfect outerwear.
7. Platform shoes
Developed in the 40s, they were given a boost in the 70s with extreme heights. We have lowered them since, but still use them to achieve sexy new heights.
A British trend from Mary Quant; minis reflect the rebellious and sexy spirit of the 60s.
9. White sneakers
They aren’t just for running, but perfect for everyday. They go with cropped slacks, mini skirts, almost anything you can think of.
10. Silk scarves
Fashionable since the 1800s and a staple of 70s fashion. Silk scarves of varying colours and patterns can be worn a multitude of ways that evoke a modern or retro look.
11.Jeans
Calvin Klein and other designers transformed jeans from work-wear to perhaps everyone’s favourite chic wardrobe staple.
12. Minimalism
This trend came about in the early 90s as next step from the neon and lycra in the 80s and insane patterns of the 60s and 70s.
13. Turtleneck
Slimming black ones were popularized by Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn and other starlets of the time, creating a chic and bohemian feel.
Pearls have always been coveted and a simple pearl earring is perhaps the most timeless jewellery look.
15. Fashion sunglasses
They were hugely popular in the 40s and the right pair made you look like a glamorous movie star with something to hide. We still love them today.
16. Bateau shirt
Popular with intellectuals, actors and artists of the 20th century, they are nautically inspired and provide a sense of timelessness and modernity to any outfit.
17. Red lipstick
There’s nothing like set of bold red lips to add sex appeal and femininity. Nudes, berries and bright colours go in and out of vogue but a red lip will always be fashionable.
18. Mods
This smooth sophisticated trend involves streamlined suits, solid colours and was popularized by Brit pop icons like The Jam.
19. Punk
In the 70s the scruffy, dirty reckless, anarchistic look was inspired by economic, social and political conflict. It’s not as popular today, but elements from the style still prevail.
20. Denim jacket
A good denim jacket can be dressed up or down, is extremely functional and is a standard of daywear looks.
21. Animal Prints
Tacky if overdone, animal print patterns are neutral and seasonless but add edge. They’re best for accessories so they don’t swallow you.
22. Leather jacket
From bikers to greasers to grunge, the leather jacket has been adopted by numerous fashion sub cultures due to its edge and versatility.
Flowers have always been a symbol of women and femininity. Thankfully it never goes out of style due to the infinite number of interpretations and styles.
24. Military
Starting with WW2, wearing military inspired garb can be a symbol of protest or support. The US-issue green and boxy shapes can be functional and androgynous.
25. Pointy toe heels
One of the most classic heel styles, they are more sophisticated and eye grabbing than rounder toes.
26. Leather (or faux) pants
Leather pants add texture, sex appeal and edge. They are versatile in that they can be casual or dressed up.
27. Chambray button downs
A classic piece that’s extremely popular right now, the chambray top is perfect for casual wear - it layers easily and is a staple menswear item.
28. Moto details
Adding an extra zipper, some leather or parallel seams add an element of biker chick without overdoing it.
29. Chiffon Blouse
Timeless, functional, breezy and easy to wear with anything.
30. Clutch Purse
Popular as long as purses are, a clutch is small and unassuming, held in the hands so you always know where it is.
